Reflections on Day One Interviewing Session
Day One Question: "How did you become a Computer
Scientist?" (unstructured interview)
- I had not realised how much skill there is in interviewing
- It was difficult without having time to prepare - need good prep., good “cheat notes”
- Not sure what we were meant to find out
- Acute, good listening skills
- Concentrating on what the answer was
- It’s good to have someone with you … to catch what you miss
- “I already had the pattern” (of a set of interesting questions)
- Fomative … could get trends
- Handy to have a third person who wasn’t directly involved to resolve disagreements
- Useful to have a human time keeper
- When you’re in the middle … you lose the overall idea of the interview. Observer useful for that.
Analysis?
- Extract salient points - categorise
- Tried to identify trends
- Depends on intent - research question
- Ask the same questions
