Programming and Robotics in Schools

Sandy Garner and Anthony Robins are involved in several activities that support programming and robotics in schools. They run robotics clubs in several Dunedin schools and Learn to Program with Robots classes in the Computer Science Department.

They are also on the organising committee for the Otago regional branch of the national RoboCup Junior competition, running an annual contest attended by over 100 school students in the Otago and Southland regions.

Python in schools

In Term 2, 2010, Professor Brendan McCane taught a group of teachers python (a programming language) at Columba College and via video-conference (using the comp150 book from our Python paper). Professor Anthony Robins continued with this in term 3.

Hands-On Science

The University runs a course in the Summer for school students thinking of studying science subjects.

The Science Teachers Helpline

The Department also runs a Science Teachers Helpline for topics related to Computer Science.
