The study of permutation patterns has benefited greatly from an experimental and computational approach. To facilitate such experiments a software suite, the "PermutationLab", has been developed here in fits and starts over the last decade. I will survey the algorithmic challenges of this area, and how to attack them. I'll also reflect on the lessons learned, and their relationship to conventional and unconventional wisdom about software development and engineering.
