Internet management is an increasingly important and challenging problem for large organisations. The staff of the University of Otago need clear guidelines about what is expected of their Internet behaviour, and their devices should be protected from online threats where possible. The Internet Usage Policy (June 2011) aims to do this, coupled with the Internet Traffic Management (ITM) project. I am keen to support the university's goals, but believe that aspects of the policy can be improved, coupled with a clear, shared understanding of what the ITM technology can do, and what is likely to remain impossible for it to achieve effectively. I will also explore some exciting researcher-oriented technologies that may help address the goals of network management in future.
