What is emergence and how does it work? Without fully answering those questions, we will study some examples of emergence to explore its various properties and implications. First, I will present two concrete examples of emergence: one example each of "weak" and "strong" emergence. Then I will discuss the ominous implications of strong emergence in the pursuit of Artificial Intelligence. If time permits, I will apply some of the properties we have observed to the emergence of scientific theories and the quirky personalities of the scientists involved.
