Title:

Quantum Physics, Information Theory and Computation

Location:

Owheo 106 - 1:00 pm, Friday 17 April

Abstract:

"Information is physical and physics is information" is one of the central mantras in the fields of quantum computing and quantum information. The notion that the physics behind your computer determines what your computer can do has lead to quantum algorithms that are exponentially faster than any classical algorithm, and cryptographic primitives that are impossible in the classical world. But the reverse is also true: if physical systems encode information, and if physical evolution is a kind of computation, then notions from information theory and theory of computing can tell us about how physical systems work. In this talk I will explore some of these connections.
