When blockchain meets networks with high latency
Blockchain technology first gained prominence due to interest and investment into bitcoin. Beyond the use for cryptocurrency, it is believed that blockchain can also be applied to emerging decentralised applications running on vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET), sensor networks and so on. Blockchain's decentralised consensus can help support the safety of future automated machine-to-machine ecosystems. However, the emerging network applications might have comparatively higher latency than typical Internet communication, which may degrade the security of decentralised consensus mechanisms. In this talk, I will introduce two popular decentralised consensus protocols: blockchain and Avalanche. I will also show how the various ranges of network latency affect the performance and the security of these two decentralised consensus mechanisms, so as to inform the design of new consensus protocols for high-latency networks in our future work.
