ABSTRACT
What are the big questions in computing? Will they get answered by
a
discipline that continues to diverge or by a discipline that coverges
with others? In this talk it will be argued that understanding the
human
mind will require convergence and that the Search for Understanding
Terrestrial Intelligence (SUTI) will require the adoption of SETI-like
approaches where every computer is harnessed in the search for signals
that contribute to an understanding of human cognitive processing.
The
relationship of the SUTI project to the history and development of
human-computer interaction and software engineering will be explored.
