Title:
Bring out supercomputing from the ivory tower
Dr Zhiyi Huang
Senior Lecturer, Dept of Computer Science
You can do supercomputing without a supercomputer. Just use the existing
networked PCs!
In this presentation, I will talk about our experience on supercomputing
with up to 32 networked PCs. Two kinds of programming environments, message
passing and distributed shared memory (DSM), will be evaluated in terms of
performance and programming convenience. Our research work on consistency
models for DSM will also be briefly described. Finally a plan to build a
dedicated, Beowulf-class PC cluster will be addressed.
