Abstract:
The Government of New Zealand introduced a savings scheme known as
Bonus Bonds in 1970, with the Bonus Bonds Centre located in Dunedin.
It is generally based on a British scheme introduced even earlier. The
University of Otago has been involved in the scheme from its inception
in verifying, on behalf of the general public, that the numbers produced
by the selection machine, affectionately known as Elsie, do not depart
from random distributions. Professor Cox has been involved in that
work since 1970, and will summarise the system, the changes to it over
the years, and major work completed last year resulting from the latest
change to the 33 year old software.
