Calculating the two-dimensional rigid motion parameters between two distinct poses is a popular technique for assessing joint function. In this talk I will describe work for calculating the rigid motion parameters for joints of the lumbar spine based on lateral x-rays of a patient in full flexion and full extension. Our method is based on splines and is therefore very general and could potentially be used for a wide class of shapes with little modification. Further I will introduce some preliminary results and ideas for automatically and semi-automatically extracting vertebrae from x-rays.
