Shared virtual teleconferencing environments like Open Croquet,AliceStreet or cAR/PE! represent communication in a closed form, whereparticipants are displayed as avatars. Besides audio and video streamsadditional communication channels like body speech elements and gesturecommunication are integrated. Furthermore, the virtual environmentsallow for the interaction with virtual tools like blackboards, projection screens and 3D models. Hand motion detection based on opticalsensors could be employed to deal with these tools in a natural way andwould further realise the integration of a gesture communicationchannel.
This presentation will give an overview of the current state of researchand will present our own attempts.
