Computers are 4000 times faster and have 4000 times the memory of only twenty years ago. But software has grown in size almost in the same proportion and common tasks seem to take nearly as long as they used to before. Where have we gone wrong?
Leaving out the business incentive to write bad software, there are some serious mis-conceptions in the way we address technical problems that promise to prolong this state of affairs indefinitely.
I explain the problem with the help of some examples from graphics programming and ask some important questions.
