Formal training in aviation is largely based on knowledge of rules and procedures. Studies of human expertise have shown that expert knowledge is highly episodic or case-based. We have conducted a number of empirical studies of the role of case-based knowledge in pilot performance. In particular, we have tested the implications of the 'predictive features' model of indexing for the organisation of safety information provided to pilots.
