Visual Effects for film makes increasing use of mathematical techniques. In this talk speakers from Weta Digital will give a partial survey of mathematical applications in VFX, including: sampling, physical simulations, machine learning and regression, PDE problems, and linear algebra topics.
Weta Digital, located in Wellington, is the Visual Effects studio known for its groundbreaking work on films including the Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong, and the upcoming Avatar.
J.P. Lewis is a contract research programmer at Weta and has worked in both film industry and academic research environments. He has authored more than 40 publications including several that have been widely adopted in VFX production.
Sebastian Sylwan is currently Head of R&D at Weta. He joined Weta from Autodesk (the leading vendor for high-end content creation software), where he was Senior Film Industry Manager. He has previously served in technology roles in VFX facilities and in Computer Graphics research labs.
