Foss spent 26 years at Otago University, resigning his post as Associate Professor
of Prehistory in 1987. He was appointed as Honorary Curator of Archaeological Fauna
in 1988 at the then National Museum, and established the Archaeozoology Laboratory
at Te Papa, Museum of New Zealand. His professional involvement in archaeology
is broad-ranging from aspects of archaeometry (particularly obsidian studies), to
culture-history in the Pacific region. The archaeology of fishing has become a special
focus of his research interests in recent years. He has carried out excavations in
New Zealand, and the Chatham Islands,
Kapingamarangi in the Carolyn Islands, the Yap Islands, the Solomon Islands,
and Papua New Guinea. His approach to archaeology merges the physical and
natural sciences with an anthropological focus on prehistoric communities.
He has published extensively on New Zealand and Pacific Prehistory, and
operates a research fishing boat MV Kaselehlia.
This vessel is used for underwater archaeology,
benthic survey work, and expeditions for collecting comparative material.
Foss is often asked about the origin of his name. No, it is not an abbreviation
of Fossil or Fossicker. It is an old name in Devon, particularly in
Stoke Gabriel, where his ancestors. come from.
