OPENS DOORS

Submission and examination of MSc theses

Well before you submit, your supervisor will choose two examiners: an internal (within the Uni. of Otago) and an external (who can be somewhere else in NZ or overseas).

When you've finished writing your thesis and your supervisors have approved it all, you're ready to submit. You should print three copies of the thesis (double-sided printing is okay! so is colour printing!) and take them to the CS Dept office, along with a signed copy of a STUDENT DECLARATION FORM. The office will soft-bind each copy of the thesis, including the declaration form in one copy. Two copies will be sent to your two examiners, and one will go to the convenor of your exam (someone in the department).

Marking the thesis is supposed to take 6 weeks, but the time can vary: we try our best to get theses marked within 6 weeks!

When the examiners have both submitted their reports, the convenor will send you and your supervisors copies of the reports. (Yours will be anonymised, since you're not supposed to know who your examiners are.) You will also be notified informally of your grade. If there are any minor corrections to be made, the convenor will let you know these as well.

When you have done any minor corrections needed, you should email the convenor a revised copy of your thesis along with a letter detailing the corrections which were made. When the convenor approves the corrections, he or she notifies Registry, which will then write to you officially confirming your result, and giving instructions for preparing/submitting the final version of the thesis. You are also encouraged to submit an electronic copy of your thesis to Otago's digital research archive.

You should also consult THE UNIVERSITY'S OFFICIAL MSc EXAMINATIONS PAGE.
