(Ian has officially retired from the Department, but is an Honorary Lecturer who is still involved in teaching some papers.)
My academic background includes a BSc in Chemistry and a Diploma in Education, as well as the more usual qualifications in Computer Science. After a few years as a secondary teacher I developed an absorbing interest in computers. This led to a career move into tertiary education in the early 1970s where I did research work on computerised public health information systems. I moved to Otago, from Queen's University, Belfast, in 1980. My current interests are in database technology in general with more specific interests in medical information systems, temporal database systems and database aspects of spatial information systems. I am still enthusiastic about good teaching!
